The year 2020 used to be a far-off date. It’s one people have been looking forward to for a very long time. The original Blade Runner movie was set in the year 2019 and brought it with a vision of many new advances to technology. However, technology is certainly not lagging far behind as compared to how people expected it to be. Here are some of the futuristic technology that’s come to fruition as of 2020.
AI or artificial intelligence has come a long way from what it used to be. According to the AI Annual Report 2018, AI startups have increased 113 percent between the years 2015 to 2018. AI has undoubtedly made an impact on the world, and it can be seen in our everyday applications that we use to make our lives much more comfortable.
- Google Maps – Here’s something that many people can’t live without. It collects data from a person’s device or smartphone to observe traffic at any time and display the fastest route to a destination.
- Uber – Another necessity we can’t live without. The application uses AI to collect data and link rides to passengers depending on their location. Where would we be if Uber wasn’t around to get us to our destination seamlessly?
Bigger and Bigger Cyberattacks
Technology’s massive revolution also has negative effects. It has given leverage to hackers who thrive on the internet and take advantage of victims’ resources. The Canva Attack of May 2019 was one of the most shocking cybercrimes the world has seen. The hacker broke into the Canva website (known for graphic designing) and stole over 139 million users’ information, along with credit card details, personal information, and account login information.
Ransomware, on the other hand, is causing businesses more and more money since they have no option but to pay unless they want their data exposed. According to a report by Cybersecurity Ventures, ransomware costs were predicted to rise to $11.5 billion by 2019. Businesses can’t afford to encounter ransomware lest they fall behind on their path to success. However, countering this with ransomware protection software is the best way to protect your business. This refers to software that delves deep into your device, removes possible threats, and prevents any ransomware from entering your laptop/mobile.
Although China planned to become the world leader in the field of AI by 2025 according to a report by Qvartz, the US has slowly started catching up in the race to victory. Self-driving cars or autonomous cars are making their way into the US marketplace and customer’s garages. Manual cars aren’t something that many people want, and why would they when you can get a car that drives itself? With the use of AI, a car has sensors that can analyze its environment and navigate without the help of a person behind the wheel. GPS allows it to refine itself and create an idea of the environment before it.
However, as amazing as the feats are, there are always risks that come with it. Cybersecurity has strongly emphasized that endpoint security is a necessity, especially when it comes to user-end devices like this. Endpoint security secures every device that uses the same network. There are endless reasons as to why someone will want to mess with an automated car, be it revenge, for fun, or a ransom.
Super Speedy Internet (aka 5G)
Speaking about the futuristic year, 2020 is close to seeing the marvels of 5G wireless technology for internet networks. Although plans began in 2019, the US and China are in a race to see who can hit mass consumer adoption first. Space X has big plans to introduce the Starlink broadband, which is a satellite-based internet network that will have about 2,500 satellites by this year alone.
Verizon has already launched 5G at the beginning of April 2019. It is available in 31 cities across the USA and has managed to obtain remarkable speeds of 1.4Gbps, which is tenfold faster than the 4G that everyone knows and loves. Apart from this, T-Mobile and Sprint, too, have made it across the finish line to provide 5G coverage in not more than 10 cities located in the US.
Technology Continues to Progress Rapidly
All these amazing achievements have their pros and cons. Despite giving consumers what they need, they also provide more targets for criminals. Not everyone can afford the best and some people will try to take the best by force or bring successful businesses down since they can’t have what they want. The key to living life successfully in 2020 is to embrace the new marvels that arrive and be wary and preventive toward any threats and risks that come with them.
